Nationwide Fungal Meningitis Outbreak - Contact Agruss Law Firm, LLC, For Help

Several people have died so far due to a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak.  Hundreds have been infected and the numbers are expected to rise.  Over 14,000 people received contaminated steroid epidurals made and distributed by the New England Compounding Center.  Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.  Symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, numbness, and speech problems.

The outbreak is linked to contaminated steroid epidurals (medication that is injected into the spine).  The medication was sourced from the New England Compounding Center, which is also called the New England Compounding Pharmacy Inc., in Framingham, Massachusetts.

New England Compounding Center has since closed down and recalled all of its products.  The steroid epidurals in question, however, have already been distributed to 23 states.  The states that New England Compounding Center steroid epidurals were distributed to are West Virginia, Virginia, Texas, South Carolina, Tennessee, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia, California, Indiana, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, and Illinois.

On its website, the Centers for Disease Control said they are “currently coordinating a multistate investigation of fungal meningitis among patients who received an epidural steroid injection with a potentially contaminated product.  This form of meningitis is not contagious.  Several of these patients also suffered strokes that are believed to have resulted from their infection.”

One person has already taken legal action against NECC.  A lawsuit was filed in a Minnesota federal court by a woman who received multiple epidural injections of a steroid product made by NECC.  Civil suits may not be NECC’s only problem.  NECC executives may be facing a criminal investigation into the meningitis outbreak.
