According to Food Safety News, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to spend $17 million on research to detect foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella and E. coli, faster in fresh produce.

The FDA has granted Illumina Inc., a San Diego-based technology company, a five year contract. The company works toward accelerating genetic research and will provide the FDA with MiSeq, a personal sequencing systems to advance genome sequencing.

Using MiSeq, Illumina will have the ability to generate high-quality genome sequences from pathogens and from bacteria collected from produce. The sequencing system is known for accuracy and high resolution in identification of bacteria.

The FDA already uses Illumina’s MiSeq systems, but they are now working to improve their genome sequencing. The agency wants to use the system to collect data that will be vital to discovering Salmonella and other foodborne pathogens that are likely to generate a future outbreak.

“According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year 48 million people become sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die as a result of a foodborne illnesses,” states Dr. Jason Dobranic, EMSL Analytical Inc.’s Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences. “EMSL Analytical provides advanced microbiology testing for food samples and environmental samples to detect Salmonella, E. coli and other foodborne pathogens to protect consumer’s health and food companies’ reputations.”
