Reports from ABC News state that the World Trade Center Health Program will now provide treatment and compensation to rescue workers who have been diagnosed with cancer after inhaling toxic dust at Ground Zero.

Under the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, first responders on September 11th will be provided with screening and treatment for any health problems they developed after working at Ground Zero. The act has also created $4.3 billion in funds for any first responders with financial losses.
Currently, 40,000 rescue workers and survivors receive monitoring, and 20,000 receive treatment as a result of the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

The fire and resulting collapse of the twin towers on September 11th contaminated the air and surroundings with particles of glass, asbestos, cement, lead, gypsum, calcium carbonate, various metals, and other toxins.

Exposure to this toxic dust through either the lungs or skin may result in many health issues including asthma, gastrointestinal-related problems, and cancer.
In particular, asbestos exposure causes lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis, while exposure to lead and other heavy metals can be toxic to the brain.

“Following the attack on September 11th, EMSL Analytical analyzed many dust and air samples to determine if  harmful substances were present,” states Ed Cahill, Vice President of EMSL Analytical Inc.’s Asbestos Division. “We have locations nationwide that are fully equipped and accredited to provide quality analysis for asbestos, lead,  and other toxins in dust and other environmental samples.”
