Last month, Kashi cereals faced a storm of angry social media due to complaints about the brand’s product labeling.  It began when a grocer from Rhode Island stopped selling the cereal and posted a note to explain to his customers why he was not selling the products.  According to the grocer, the product used genetically engineered and nonorganic ingredients.  Photos of the note quickly went viral.

According to Kashi’s general manager, “The FDA has chosen not to regulate the term ’natural.’“ He went on to state that according to the company they define natural as ”food that’s minimally processed, made with no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sweeteners"

Also in April, Nutella made national headlines when a class-action lawsuit was settled over the company’s health claims.   According to the settlement, the company will pay just over $3 million, change its marketing campaign and modify the Nutella label to show the fat and sugar content on the front of the container.

“Both of these cases received as much attention as they did because many consumers felt mislead by the food labels that were used,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading nutritional labeling and food testing company.  “There is clear confusion on the part of many consumers with regards to terms such as natural, organic and genetically modified organism (GMO) when it comes to the foods they purchase.  Clear and concise food labeling provides transparency for food manufacturers and consumers alike.  At EMSL we can help with a vast array of food testing and labeling services,” he continued.

As one of the primary food testing laboratories in the nation, EMSL has advanced instrumentation and nutritional labeling expertise to help industry, government regulators and consumers understand what is in the products they buy.
