Calgary, Alberta (Apil 9, 2012) -- Too many local Calgary companies are still relying on old school marketing methods such as the Yellow Pages or flyers in the mail, or some are not advertising at all. Norm Paradis, the owner of Calgary’s online marketing says that these businesses don’t even realize that they are letting their competitors get all the new customers. He stresses that with the right online marketing strategy any business can significantly increase their business and make more money.

So how does Paradis help local Calgary businesses be found on the internet? Well he says, you have to start with an overall strategy that lays out what you are going to do. It all depends on the person’s budget, but he says that the ideal campaign would start with a good simple website that gives a potential customer exactly what they are looking for. This includes a mobile optimized version of the website that only has the necessary information such as phone number, address with a map listing, and maybe a description of services and a few reviews. That is it. Anything else is overkill for a mobile website. Paradis insists that more and more people are using their smart phones to search online for services and products from local businesses.

Next, those websites have to be found by the search engines or else no one will ever see them.  This is where Pay per Click may be an option as it is something that can be implemented virtually overnight and the client can be at the top of Google and getting some business right away. PPC as it is otherwise known can get expensive though, so Paradis would also recommend a long term strategy of getting to the top of the free Google results which also includes a Google Places listing. This is called search engine optimization or SEO. This is much more difficult to achieve and usually takes a lot more time to get the desired results of a first page Google placement. It all depends on the competition. Paradis says some businesses could be on the first page in a month, while others could take up to four or five months.

Increasingly, social networks are becoming a critical part of the SEO strategy, so clients must have a Facebook business page, a twitter page, and a Google plus page. In addition they must have customers that visit their website click like or tweet, or Google plus their page as an indication that they liked what they found and would like to share it with their friends.  Google and the other search engines see this as a vote of confidence and will give the website a higher ranking because of it.
