J&J Recalls Aveeno Baby Lotion after Finding High Levels of Bacteria

EMSL Analytical provides advanced microbiology testing services for consumer products

Johnson & Johnson announced that it is voluntarily recalling one lot, which comprises 2,200 tubes, of Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Lotion as a precautionary measure after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found high levels of a common type of bacteria in the product.

According to the company, test results done by an independent laboratory showed that levels of bacteria were not excessive. The lotion was sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas, and no health effects related to the recall have been reported.

The bacteria that sparked this recall are known as coagulase-negative Staphylococci. They are commonly found on the skin and mucous membranes of humans, so they are not typically considered a health threat.

“As one of the nation’s leading testing laboratories, EMSL Analytical offers companies advanced microbiology testing services for their consumer products in cases such as these,” states Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., National Microbiology Director at EMSL. “We help companies deal with quality-control issues and recalls, and because we are an FDA registered, cGMP compliant, and ISO 17025 accredited laboratory, our clients know that they can rely on our results.”
