After Cargill Recall, Tougher Rules on Poultry Safety Possible

EMSL Analytical, Inc. works with companies to determine appropriate testing methods

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) plans to “take steps” to ensure that people do not get sick from ground poultry, says Elizabeth Hagen, the undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Cargill Inc.’s recall of 36 million pounds of turkey meat drove the agency to examine their existing policies.

Cargill’s recall, which began in August, is the second largest meat recall in U.S. history. It was triggered by the Salmonella poisoning that sickened 70 people and killed one. The Agriculture Department recently confirmed that the Heidelberg strain of Salmonella—which is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics—was responsible.

“EMSL Analytical, Inc. has a highly experienced Special Projects team that customizes our clients’ analysis methods to fit their needs,” stated Joseph Frasca, Senior VP at EMSL. “If FSIS institutes new regulations, we can help companies navigate the system.”
