CUSTOMER SUCCESS: Aeronautics Powerhouse Lockheed Martin Flies High with BMC Software

WEBWIRE

HOUSTON - With every division of aeronautics giant Lockheed Martin focused on its F-35 aircraft program, the company relies on BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC) to keep the critical underlying IT systems running at peak performance.

To meet the high demand for the new aircraft, Lockheed Martin has to ensure its manufacturing systems operate without delays or failure. Doing so requires IT tools that can identify all elements in the technology environment so staff can identify problems quickly and prevent system outages.

Lockheed Martin relies on the BMC Atrium Configuration Management Database (CMDB) solution to store information on its IT assets and the BMC Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping (ADDM) solution to manage how the assets interact.

Like many aircraft manufacturers, Lockheed Martin has a number of legacy applications that are critical to design and production. When those systems were implemented, documentation requirements were not as rigorous as they are today, so much of the information about how they are set up and managed is not readily available, making it difficult to maintain them and resolve problems when they occur. By using BMC ADDM to capture data about those legacy systems and store that data in the Atrium CMDB, Lockheed Martin will be better prepared to handle problems with legacy systems should they occur in the future.

Lockheed Martin also uses the BMC Remedy IT Service Management Suite to support its service desk, change and other IT service management disciplines and the BMC BladeLogic Automation Suite to automate software distribution, patching and configuration management. Eventually, Lockheed Martin plans to integrate its Atrium solutions with the Remedy suite.

Lockheed Martin also is implementing the BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management solution to monitor the components of its electronic work instructions (EWI) application, which provides detailed manufacturing steps to workers on its production line. BMC ProactiveNet will monitor EWI components and other critical manufacturing applications, then issue alerts when problems are detected. BMC ProactiveNet’s, baselining capability is important to Lockheed.
