Canon Makes a Splash with New 10X42 L Waterproof Image Stabilized Binoculars for Outdoor and Marine Use

LAS VEGAS, NV -- 1/27/2005 -- By combining a rugged waterproof* design and precision image stabilized optics, Canon’s new 10X42 L IS WP binoculars provide serious outdoorsmen and maritime adventurers with an essential optical tool.

A first for the line of Canon binoculars, Canon has added the “L” designation to the 10X42 L IS WP binoculars. Denoted by the signature red stripe, Canon L-series lenses are known industry wide as the symbol for unrivaled optical quality. These are also the first Canon IS (Image Stabilization) binoculars to be fully waterproof (WP).

“Canon has targeted its new 10X42 L IS WP binoculars to the demanding needs of outdoorsmen and marine recreation enthusiasts,” said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc, a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE:CAJ). “In a rugged and waterproof body, we have married our unique IS mechanism and high quality L lens technology to create one of the brightest, clearest and feature-rich binoculars available for this price.”

Dawn, dusk, and heavily overcast conditions present lighting challenges that affect viewing ability both on land and at sea. Canon has designed these new binoculars with an emphasis on low light performance. The 10X42 L IS WP binoculars have a large 4.2mm exit pupil, the largest of any Canon IS binocular. They also feature a 65degree apparent field-of-view, resulting in one of the widest and brightest fields-of-views in its class.

Spotting buoys on the high seas or game in the brush is a challenging task that requires a high contrast ratio. The entire optical system utilizes Canon’s Super Spectra multi-coating, which delivers sharpness and brilliant color reproduction. The coating also provides a high contrast ratio and helps to suppress image degrading flare. Two ultra low dispersion (UD) elements, on each side, are also used to help reduce chromatic aberration and enhance sharpness. The eyepieces also include Canon’s Doublet field flattener lenses to help provide an edge-to-edge distortion free view. The body is coated with a metallic coating to prevent fogging, and a rubberized surface ensures a secure grip in most environments.

Canon first developed its proprietary Image Stabilization (IS) Technology to meet the demanding needs of imaging professionals. However, binocular users out on the open ocean or sportsmen requiring a discerning eye for game will be able to reap the benefits of IS technology with Canon’s new 10x42 L IS WP model. The mechanism in these binoculars is Canon’s exclusive Vari-Angle Prism that compensates for most pitch and yaw variations. A one touch IS button was added for ease of use, along with a smart self-timer that automatically turns IS off after five minutes to conserve battery life.

The 10x42 L IS WP binoculars will be available in March for an estimated street price of $1,599**.
