LA Testing offers mold and other indoor air quality (IAQ) testing solutions to help keep homes safe.

Pasadena, CA

An article last week in the Peninsula Daily News described two seven month old twins who have been battling respiratory problems that “doctors say was contracted through exposure to black mold in a Port Townsend rental home.” The children have been at an area children’s hospital since last December.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading indoor air quality testing laboratory, has a long tradition of providing testing solutions to property owners and environmental professionals to help prevent these types of situations.

Mold in indoor environments can cause a host of medical conditions. These range from allergies to infections. Fungal infections are typically caused by inhaling airborne fungal spores that make their way to a person’s respiratory tract. People with undeveloped or weakened immune systems are generally the most susceptible to infection.

Allergies can also be caused by exposure to mold, not to mention it can be a trigger for asthma. Allergic symptoms may include watery eyes, congestion, itchy nose, sneezing, coughing and rashes.

Mold is a normal part of the outdoor environment, but steps should be taken to prevent mold from growing in indoor environments. There are a number of basic steps people can follow to minimize their mold exposure. For example, if a property suffers from high humidity using an air conditioner or a dehumidifier could help.

“If there are any signs of water leaks from plumbing, water stains around windows or ceilings, or excessive moisture around the building’s foundation have the problem fixed right away,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical. “In bathrooms and laundry rooms install exhaust fans or open windows to decrease the humidity. Also keep carpets clean and regularly replace air filters.”
