Metso has received an order to deliver a biomass boiler to RWE npower renewables for a co-generation plant to be located at Tullis Russell Papermakers at Markinch, Fife in the UK. The commercial operation is scheduled for begin 2013. The value of the order is approximately EUR 75 million, which will be included in the Energy and Environmental Technology´s Q1 orders received.

Metso´s delivery includes a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler with a capacity of 155 MWth and a flue gas treatment plant. The new power boiler will be part of a co-generation plant that will supply the paper mill of Tullis Russell with heat and electricity from biomass, mainly recycled wood. The plant will have an installed capacity of 50 megawatts (MWe) and will replace the existing coal-fired power plant at Tullis Russell, and thereby reducing the CO2 emissions from the plant significantly.

“The combined skills and expertise of our chosen contractor Metso will be a major asset during the construction of the new Tullis Russell biomass power plant. This project is RWE’s largest investment to date in biomass based power generation and part of our ongoing commitment to investing EUR 1 billion per annum in renewable energy”, says Stephan Lohr, RWE head of biomass.

RWE npower renewables is the UK subsidiary of RWE Innogy and is one of the UK’s leading renewable energy developers and operators, committed to developing and operating biomass power plants, wind farms and hydro plant to produce sustainable electricity.
