Actor Simon Bowman has won an apology from the Daily Mirror newspaper

Actor Simon Bowman, currently starring in the West End Production of Les Misérables, has won an apology from the Daily Mirror following the publication of the false allegation that he and Hannah Waterman are in a romantic relationship.

On Wednesday 6 January 2010, the Daily Mirror published an article under the headline “Hannah Waterman new man revealed to be Les Misérables star Simon Bowman” which claimed that he and Hannah Waterman were having a relationship. This is completely untrue. In fact, Simon Bowman and Hannah Waterman are old family friends and Simon Bowman has been in a serious relationship with someone else for 20 years.

The Mirror has now publicly apologised to Simon Bowman stating:

“Simon Bowman – An Apology
On Wednesday 6 January we suggested that Simon Bowman was Hannah Waterman’s new man following her split from her husband Ricky Groves. Simon is a family friend, he has been in a serious relationship with someone else for 20 years, and there is no romantic relationship between him and Hannah. We apologise to him for the distress and embarrassment caused by our suggestion to the contrary.”

Proceedings remain ongoing to determine the level of damages the Mirror will pay Simon Bowman. The newspaper has made what’s known as an Offer of Amends which is an offer to pay Simon Bowman such compensation and legal costs as may be agreed or determined to be payable, in addition to publishing a correction and apology.

Speaking in London today, Mr Bowman said that:

“The false claim that I have been having an affair has been very distressing, to me, and to my long term partner. There is no basis for the claim whatsoever. I am pleased that the Mirror has now accepted that the allegation is untrue and that it has apologised for the distress and embarrassment caused.”
