Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions that may be awarded to an engineer. According to the NAE, academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, and education. Membership is also given to those who pioneer new and developing fields of technology, make major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, and develop/implement innovative approaches to engineering education.

Since 1997, Dr. Kirk is responsible for defining the vision for the Company’s next generation hardware architecture, including the market-leading NVIDIA® GeForce® family of graphics processing units (GPUs ) for desktop PCs and leading game consoles such as the highly anticipated Playstation3, as well as the GoForce® handheld GPU for cell phones and other handheld devices. These technologies include hardware texture mapping, programmable shading, data parallel processing, and more.

Dr. Kirk is also credited with the observation that data parallel GPU performance accelerates faster than scalar CPU performance, exceeding Moore’s Law.

Dr. Kirk is the inventor of 50 patents, patent applications and articles relating to graphics design and has published more than 50 articles on graphics technology. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the California Institute of Technology.
