Federal Minimum Wage Increase July 24th, 2009
Workers earning the minimum wage will see a pay increase in 29 states beginning July 24th. The federal minimum wage will rise to $7.25 an hour, and all states that have a minimum wage lower than this amount will be affected.
While this minimum wage increase will be felt in many states, only 4 face new a requirement for wage postings. This is due to the last federal minimum wage posting including yearly increases for 2007, 2008, and 2009. Employers in most states will not need to do anything with their existing minimum wage postings as long as they were posted after the federal change in 2007.
Employers in Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, and New York, however, will need to update their state minimum wage postings, as these are tied to the federal rate and now have new posting requirements.
For these states, some compliance providers will try to sell employers new posters with these notices. One provider that will NOT do this, however, is Compliance Poster Company of Monrovia, California. “We only sell our clients new posters when they reflect major revisions,” says Patty Blum, president of Compliance Poster Company. “This change only affects a small portion of the poster for these states, and we have a special Peel-n-Post™ update sticker that can be applied to our All-On-One™ posters that saves employers a significant amount over purchasing entirely new posters.”
Compliance Poster Company also offers a free compliance audit for businesses to ensure that they are fully compliant with all state and federal regulations. “We offer products that cover both mandatory to post and mandatory to communicate postings, and have compliance experts available to help any business find out what they need to comply with labor laws,” said Blum.
