Lucent Technologies Adds Partners’ Technologies to Deliver New Services on VoIP and IMS-Based Networks

Agreements with Colibria and PCTEL enhance Lucent’s comprehensive next-generation communications solutions for carriers

FEBRUARY 09, 2006 MURRAY HILL, N.J. — Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) today announced a pair of agreements for technology that complements and enhances its Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based solution, enabling the delivery of instant messages and multimedia messages to wireless devices, and the use of a single Wi-Fi/cellular dual mode phone for public and enterprise networks services.

Under the agreements, Lucent has begun offering solutions incorporating technologies from Colibria and PCTEL (Nasdaq:PCTI).

The Colibria Companion Instant Messaging and Presence Server represents a powerful carrier-grade platform, delivering Open Mobile Alliance (OMA)-certified Instant Messaging and Presence Service (IMPS) and Session Initiation Protocol/IP Multimedia Subsystem support. Colibria’s instant messaging technology has been integrated in Lucent’s MiLife® Presence Solution. Colibria’s technology has leading embedded client interoperability, with its server technologies also supporting legacy interfaces on a variety of applications, encompassing IMPS, IM, Voice Over IP and Push-to-Talk over Cellular.

PCTEL’s Voice-Enabled Roaming Client (Roaming Client - VE) Software works on dual mode mobile handsets to enable end-users to seamlessly and easily roam between cellular and Wi-Fi networks. The software allows subscribers to have a single telephone number to make and receive voice calls on traditional CDMA- or GSM-based cellular networks or on broadband wireless networks, such as Wi-Fi networks, using VoIP. In addition to voice telephony, the software supports access to critical messaging services like SMS (Short Message Service) and Voice Mail.

“By integrating these technologies in Lucent’s solutions, we will help our carrier customers bring blended lifestyle services to mobile subscribers,” said Sandip Mukerjee, vice president, Lucent Technologies Applications Solutions Business Unit. “The agreements with Colibria and PCTEL are part of our strategy to continuously enhance and complement Lucent’s IMS-based solution to maintain our position as a leader in IMS.”

Lucent’s IMS-based solution consists of products and applications, both with unique Bell Labs developed enhancements, and services. The solution enables carriers to simply and cost-effectively deliver personalized services, which are specific to a user’s lifestyle, that are the result of inter-working voice, video and data capabilities. These services are known as “blended lifestyle services.” The Lucent IMS-based solution also helps reduce the introduction costs and time-to-market for new services by leveraging a common applications infrastructure to deliver services with a common “look and feel” across third-generation (3G) mobile, Wi-Fi, and wireline networks.
