Harris Corporation Demonstrates Global Medical Imagery Access, Sharing and Collaboration Capabilities

Demonstration Provides Glimpse into the Future of Improved Patient Care Using Integrated Healthcare Imagery and Information

CHICAGO (HIMSS’09, Booth #3974) — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) is demonstrating its advanced solution for global medical imagery access and sharing during the HIMSS’09 Healthcare IT Conference and Exhibition being held April 4-8 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The company is leveraging technology originally developed for exacting defense and intelligence applications to enable medical images and documents to be linked to a patient’s electronic medical record, quickly located, and shared online for viewing and collaboration at multiple sites.

The demonstration provides a glimpse into the future when medical professionals will be able to remotely locate, view and manipulate very large, multi-gigabyte digital images in an online, virtual environment that ensures the images remain integrated with other patient records. The demonstration also showcases the ability to transmit extremely large files to the distant, outer edges of a network using Harris tactical radios with broadband Ethernet capabilities. In addition, the Harris Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) CONNECT solution enables secure, interoperable health information exchange between federal agencies and the private healthcare sector — while patients retain control of how their information is shared.

“In today’s transient and mobile society, global access to stored medical images and documents is crucial to better patient care. It is particularly important to patients who have had testing and treatment at multiple locations within a city, a region, or even globally,” said Jim Traficant, vice president of Harris Healthcare Solutions. “This technology delivers clinicians the complete patient data picture needed to make informed treatment decisions at the point of care, no matter where the original data resides.”

For example, physicians at a large city hospital could use the system to view and manipulate the medical imagery of an injured patient in a rural location while collaborating with on-site medical personnel. The imagery would be linked to the patient’s electronic medical record and included in a registry, making it readily accessible by disparate systems in different locations as the patient moves from one healthcare system to another. In addition, the system has ’awareness’ capabilities to alert physicians when new information about a particular patient becomes available.

In addition to providing global image awareness and access over existing networks, the system can extend to the edges of a network for emergency first-responders and disaster scenarios with the Harris RF-7800W High-Capacity Line-of-Sight radio. The RF-7800W is a broadband Ethernet radio that provides a wireless backbone for securely transferring Internet Protocol (IP) traffic at distances up to 50 kilometers. This radio brings wireless, high-bandwidth data networking to remote locations and challenging environments where patients are in need of critical care.
