The history behind Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday in Ireland and UK can be seen originally as a medieval practice. The story goes that children from poor families were sent to work as apprentices and domestic servants to work for the rich. These children were given a day off once in the year in the middle of the Lent to visit their ĎMother Churchí and worship Virgin Mary. The children would visit their mothers after visiting the Cathedral or Mother Church of their home town. They also presented their mothers with flowers they picked along the way. Besides this, Girls used to bake special Mothering Cake on this day. After the Industrial Revolution, mothering Sunday celebration almost lapsed when pattern of living changed. However, after World War II, the custom was revived. The Mothers Day tradition has spread far and wide and especially American culture has helped establish Mothers Day as a popular occasion in European countries.

To express love and gratitude, people in Ireland and UK will this weekend present flowers and cards to their mothers on this Mothers Day, Sunday March 22nd. People often pamper their Mothers with breakfast in bed and take their mother out for lunches and dinners. Caring children give their mothers gifts out of love. In honour of mothers, Programs, Skits and Plays are organised at several places.
