Prescription Drug Darvon May Be Banned - Expect Lawsuits

After an investigation urged by the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, an advisory board to the Food and Drug Administration has urged that the FDA withdraw the prescription pain medication Darvin from the market after 50 years. Darvon, better known to public as Darvocet is one of the most commonly prescribed medications on the market; in the year 2007, more than 20 million prescriptions for Darvon were written by physicians.

Qualitest/Vintage Pharmaceuticals and Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturers and marketers of the drug insist that the drug is safe, despite the FDA panel’s finding that the drug’s high overdose potential and relatively low level of pain relief make it to dangerous for public consumption.

It seems a ban on the drug is imminent and is almost certain to be followed by lawsuits filed by those who may have been harmed by this commonly prescribed drug. After all, it’s not every day that something you always thought of as safe is withdrawn from the market for being hazardous.
