The importance of comparing like for like with health insurance

Mike Dalby, Director of Health-on-Line, comments “We are seeing more and more evidence of people shopping around for their health insurance in order to reduce the premiums they are paying. Whilst this is a practice that we encourage, it’s important that when reviewing all the options, people consider the cover that each policy offers.”

“When looking at alternative policies, the monthly premium is not the only consideration which should be taken into account. The features and benefits of the policy are equally if not more important. Whilst a much reduced premium is attractive, individuals need to make sure they are aware of and happy with the level of cover they will receive at that price. In order to make savings, reducing the level of cover is certainly an option, as long as the individual understands what they are removing from their policy”.

Once they have a clear idea of their requirements, it’s a case of looking at the policies available that answer these needs through the benefits and features they offer.”

Dalby concludes “It can be difficult to compare policies from different providers on the basis of their features rather than just price. Whilst price is obviously very important, it is essential that people look at the terms and conditions of the policies. By taking time to read through the policy documentation and sales information available before purchasing and deciding which policy you want to take out and make sure you really are comparing like for like.”
