Nokia Siemens Networks to manage the mobile backhaul of T-Mobile Austria’s network to ensure high bandwidth and quality of service

Vienna, Austria / Espoo, Finland, T-Mobile Austria is moving to guarantee its customers high-speed and high-quality mobile broadband services, while co-operating closely with Nokia Siemens Networks in regard to managing its backhaul network.

The complete managed services solution – which includes planning, installation and management – will provide increased transport network throughput, bringing substantial operational benefits and enabling T-Mobile Austria to focus even more on delivering advanced mobile broadband to its subscribers.

“With this agreement we are transferring an operational part of our network into the hands of Nokia Siemens Networks. This allows us to further focus on providing our customers with new and higher quality services thanks to increased bandwidth, which Nokia Siemens Networks will supply,” says Jim Burke, Chief Technical Officer at T-Mobile Austria. “We believe that this step will help us, to increase customer satisfaction even further and get an edge on our competition.”

Under the contract, which runs through 2013, Nokia Siemens Networks will assume full responsibility for the optimization and operation of the mobile backhaul network. The control and responsibility for the network and the supervision of its quality remains with T-Mobile Austria.

Nokia Siemens Networks brings its expertise in terms of product and installation, including field services, remote operations from a network operation centre (NOC) as well as network planning and optimization services for high network performance and improved end-user experience. T-Mobile will benefit from reduced expenditure from day one. In addition, they gain transparency for operational costs, which will be fully predictable over the duration of the contract, even as the required bandwidth capacity increases.

Nokia Siemens Networks will optimize the network by selecting the right backhaul technology, which fulfills the requirements of bandwidth, quality and best price. Technologies like leased lines from different suppliers, dark fiber or also microwave will be considered. For own access Nokia Siemens Networks is supplying its market-leading transmission and microwave equipment to fit the backhaul network to the future needs: The managed service includes advanced maintenance and field service for the backhaul for a period of five years. This will lead to best in class network quality and bandwidth inline with the development of mobile broadband.

To cope with increasing demand for broadband mobile data services operators need to upgrade their networks to provide new wireless technologies, which in turn require cost-effective optimization of the transport infrastructure, connecting the access network with the core network. With Nokia Siemens Networks’ solutions, operators can work out the most suitable business models including a whole range of platforms and managed services.

The managed services deal requires Nokia Siemens Networks to provide high-quality backhaul from T-Mobile’s more than 6,000 radio network sites across Austria, serving 3.3 million customers.
