Motorola appointed to optimize TETRA network coverage for enhanced mission critical communications

Basingstoke, UK – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) announced today that it has launched its Intelligent Optimization Service (IOS) after it was successfully used by the Isle of Man Department of Home Affairs to benchmark and optimize the coverage of its TETRA network. The IOS is an extension to Motorola’s existing comprehensive services portfolio which spans from integration and support to fully managed services solutions.

The new IOS helps TETRA operators to benchmark and optimize their network through the collection of live data from the network. This enables them to build an accurate picture of the performance from the end users’ point of view. In comparison to traditional techniques, the service is a cost effective solution used to benchmark and improve the performance of mission critical networks. The service is fully proven and in addition to the Isle of Man deployment, has been used extensively by cellular networks to cost effectively optimise network performance.

“Following the successful deployment of the TETRA Intelligent Optimisation Service, we have worked closely with Motorola to enhance the service. This has enabled us to identify unique local knowledge about the system and baseline the coverage and we are now able to compare the system performance over time.” says Robert Williamson, technical director, Isle of Man Department of Home Affairs.

The Isle of Man TETRA network provided by Motorola has been providing excellent service since its installation in 2004, supporting mission critical communications for normal day-to-day operations as well as major events such as the world famous Isle of Man TT race. To ensure continued excellent service and ‘always on’ communications for mission-critical operations, the Isle of Man used Motorola’s IOS to measure and improve network performance. The data obtained through IOS, based on measurements from over 4,000 end user terminals, meant that the Isle of Man was able to validate its network coverage footprint and monitor network performance.

The solution provides precise performance data that informs and enables TETRA network operators to validate and maintain optimal coverage and capacity performance over their entire network. Notable benefits of the service include improved service quality for end users, maximised usage of available network resources and reduced operating costs.

Gary Aitkenhead, director of system integration and lifecycle services, Government & Public Safety EMEA, Motorola, said: “We’re very pleased to launch our Intelligent Optimization Service and that the Isle of Man with whom we have a strong relationship was the first customer to use it. I am sure that it will prove to be an invaluable tool for our other customers, as it has been to the IOM, to optimize their TETRA networks in a quick, accurate and cost-effective manner.”

Earlier this year, Motorola was chosen to supply a fleet of its covert TETRA terminals to the Isle of Man Constabulary and Customs & Excise where the terminal’s small, lightweight design and innovative features made it an ideal device for use in everyday covert operations.
