Dow Recognized for Safety Excellence in the Construction Industry

Midland, MI, The Dow Chemical Company has been selected as a 2008 recipient of the Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CISE) Award for the Company’s continuous dedication to safety and enforcement of Dow Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) policies through all levels of business.

The award, handed out by the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT), recognizes companies that exemplify construction site safety in the United States, Canada and the rest of the world. CISE Award winners were announced today at the CURT National Conference in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

“At Dow, the safety of our employees, contractors and communities is our top priority,” said Don Taylor, Dow functional vice president for Manufacturing & Engineering (M&E). “As part of our 2015 Sustainability Goals and our Drive to Zero safety initiative, we are committed to working with all stakeholders, including contractor firms, to set new standards for safety. This includes ensuring our safety programs have the necessary involvement and support to be effective. We are very honored to accept this year’s CISE Award.”

CISE Award recipients were selected based on a rigorous set of criteria, including the ability to demonstrate an adherence to CURT’s Owner’s Safety Blueprint, as well as setting the industry standard for delivering projects with little or no injuries and illnesses. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the incident rate achieved by Dow’s work group was less than 10 percent of the U.S. national average (comparable injury/illness data is not readily available globally).

“Receiving this award reflects the ongoing daily commitment of Dow’s Engineering Solutions Organization and its many partners who worked hard – along with many independent contractor firms and individuals across the globe – to continuously improve our performance,” said Margaret Walker, Dow vice president of Engineering Solutions, Technology Centers and M&E Work Processes. “Receiving recognition from CURT is validation that we are making good progress in creating a safe place for employees and contractors to work – at all times. Engagement at the personal level is key to our success.”

Dow’s Drive to Zero philosophy for EH&S events was a key differentiator that led to Dow winning the award. This philosophy – which is focused on eliminating unplanned events involving personal injury, process safety or the environment – is reinforced through training sessions, supervisor meetings and other safety emphasis programs and communications.
