Alcatel-Lucent and Neo-Sky to test WiMAX Rev-e capabilities in Spain
Paris — Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it is one of the companies selected by Neo-Sky, a company of Iberdrola Group, to deploy a turnkey WiMAX 802.16e-2005 (Rev-e) network in Madrid, enabling the Spanish broadband operator to test and accelerate the deployment of WiMAX services in Spain. The network will enable services such as Voice overIP (VoIP), high speedInternet access and advanced multimedia broadband services for nomadic users, fully supported by computer-embedded end user devices.
In the framework of this field trial, Alcatel-Lucent will provide Neo-Sky with a complete WiMAX Rev-e solution, including base stations and WiMAX access controllers, and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) core networking equipment, software and application platforms and end-user terminals. The IMS architecture enables the delivery of advanced and personalized telephony and multimedia services from fixed and mobile access. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide design and planning for end-to-end integration of Neo-Sky’s network along with maintenance and provisioning services.
“With this WiMAX field trial we are laying the foundations to know the performances that the future commercial networks will be able to support to meet our corporate customer’s requirements for easy-to-use wireless broadband services offering nomadic capabilities, including voice, data, and multimedia, and best-in-class quality of service.” said César Arranz, Executive President of Neo-Sky. “We trust Alcatel-Lucent’s ability to provide the required technologies and services to help us evaluate and deploy a WiMAX solution that meets our high expectations.”
Alcatel-Lucent’s 802.16e-2005 WiMAX solution has been selected for its complete end-to-end solution including its superior radio efficiency, its capability to support fixed, nomadic and mobile services, it’s standard IMS platform, and because it ensures interoperability with a wide variety of end-user terminals commercially available today. Thanks to Alcatel-Lucent’s Open CPE Program, the company’s radio access infrastructure supports a wide range of terminals in all form factors and from various equipment partners. This will give Neo-Sky access to a vast range of attractively priced interoperable end-user devices. Alcatel-Lucent has provided a fully integrated solution, from the initial design through to supervision of the testing and validation of the services available to a set of specially chosen customers in a ‘user-friendly’ trial at three different locations in Spain.
“Alcatel-Lucent is fully committed to supporting Neo-Sky by boosting WiMAX deployments in Spain. This project will provide on-the-ground proof of the ability of our modular and flexible WiMAX solution to support a wide variety of configurations, from low-density rural coverage to high-capacity urban deployments,” said Pierre Barnabé President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in France, Iberia & Italy. “We are proud that Neo Sky is renewing its trust in Alcatel-Lucent and confident that our unmatched expertise will help it turn WiMAX into revenue-generating broadband business.”
With 30 commercial contracts and more than 70 trials around the world, Alcatel-Lucent is the undisputed leader in the WiMAX market. It is also a global leader in network planning, design, deployment, consulting, project management and network optimization.
