Learn English Conversation By Focusing On Correct Vocabulary
Immigrants and international students often struggle to learn English conversation. Many students do very well on written tests, but cannot understand normal conversations.
What is the problem? How can students learn English conversation easily and effectively? The answer is vocabulary.
English conversation is, in fact, quite different from English reading. Written English tends to use vocabulary words that are based on French and Latin. This kind of formal English is, in fact, much easier for students who speak Romance languages such as Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, or French. These students often do quite well when reading English, but have a lot of trouble understanding normal speech.
English conversation vocabulary, however, uses more words of Saxon or Old English origin.
The difference between conversation and more formal English vocabulary is one reason that even “advanced” students have difficulty with everyday conversations.
So, to communicate with native speakers its very important to learn the Saxon-based vocabulary found in casual conversation.
To learn this vocabulary, students must listen to more casual English. Find lessons that focus on real English conversation. Another great source of casual English is film. Listen to American and English movies and read the subtitles. This will also help.
