WEBWIRE

Paris, June 2008 – Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU)today signed a USD 10 million GSM/EDGE expansion contract with TrueMove, one of the leading mobile operators in Thailand. This network enhancement and expansion will enable TrueMove to increase the capacity and coverage of its existing GSM/ EDGE network in Bangkok, Central-West, South and North regions of Thailand, and enhance its mobile traffic backhaul capabilities.

More and more people throughout Thailand want high-quality mobile communications services, both voice and more advanced capabilities, such as high-speed data connections. Alcatel-Lucent’s GSM/EDGE solutions will enable TrueMove to reduce its total cost of ownership, taking into account such critical factors as site acquisition and leasing costs, civil engineering requirements, as well as power consumption, transmission, and operating and maintenance costs.

“With the further expansion of their GSM/EDGE network, we are helping TrueMove anticipate customers’ needs more effectively and contribute to the development of the Kingdom and of digital inclusion. TrueMove represents a growing number of service providers in high-growth economies that have chosen Alcatel-Lucent’s solutions because they allow cost-effective upgrades,” said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent activities in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its industry-leading multi-standard radio access solution including its latest Base Station Controller platform (BSC Evolution) and fully flexible TWIN transceiver, and deliver a new Intelligent Network (IN) Convergent Charging Platform at core network. Alcatel-Lucent will also supply its microwave systems that, together with the optical multi-service platforms already deployed, offer TrueMove an optimized solution to aggregate multiple traffic types and backhaul the mobile traffic from base stations in provinces to the core.

The flexibility and scalability of Alcatel-Lucent’s mobile next-generation network solution, already installed in the TrueMove network, and its new convergent IN platform make it cost-effective and simple to upgrade and evolve toward 3G. It is also IMS ready. Alcatel-Lucent’s radio access solution is cost-efficient because it can accommodate multiple standards, such as GSM/GPRS/EDGE/EDGE Evolution and 3G, using the same radio equipment. Furthermore, service providers can increase the capacity of their platform as demand warrants by introducing EDGE Evolution, HSDPA and HSUPA on the same platform by a simple software upgrade. Alcatel-Lucent’s experience in design, integration, testing and project management skills also play a key role in ensuring TrueMove continues to enhance its customers’ experience.

Alcatel-Lucent is a lead player in the GSM/EDGE global market with more than 180 customers in over 90 countries, the world leader in optical networking since 2001 (Source: Ovum RHK) and the world’s leading manufacturer of microwave transmission equipment, with more than 500,000 microwave radios deployed worldwide.
