Sorensonís Ranch School Using Horses to Rehabilitate Students

KOOSHAREM, UT -- Sorensonís Ranch School, a therapeutic boarding school for troubled teens located in central Utah, is implementing an innovative equine therapy program to help foster recovery efforts for its students. Using professional educators specialized in equine-assisted training, at-risk youths are able to improve self esteem, establish a sense of self worth and help address mental, emotional and physical issues.

ďOur equine program is a great way to help our kids get on the road to recovery,Ē said Shane Sorenson, co-owner and director of Sorensonís Ranch School.

ďHorses are non-judgmental, give unconditional love and help with trust issues, which are things many of our students have dealt with in the past,Ē he added.

Founded in 1959, Sorensonís Ranch School is a licensed residential and substance abuse facility for students with a history of problems with defiance, low self-esteem, running away and other behavioral issues.

In addition to counseling, drug treatment and education programs, the schoolís horse ranch is an integral part of the rehabilitation process for students, making the school one of the premiere teen help programs in the country.

Sorensonís equine program also addresses a condition known Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). RAD is a disorder marked by a childís inability to build satisfying and meaningful relationships. It usually stems from a traumatic or unpleasant experience early in life.

ďWeíve seen some amazing improvements in students who suffer from RAD after theyíve completed our equine program,Ē said Sorenson. ďIt allows them to build meaningful relationships with these animals, which then carriers over to stronger relationships with family and peers.Ē

In addition to specializing in RAD therapy, Sorensonís Ranch School also addresses a host of physical and psychological issues.
