Taiwanese Customers To Enjoy Rich IP-Based TV and Multimedia Services.
TAIPEI, Taiwan - More than half a million customers will experience IPTV and other interactive multimedia services through Vastar Cable TV System’s new network, powered by Ethernet solutions from Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT].

Vastar is Taiwan’s first cable TV service provider licensed for fixed-line business services. To better serve its customers, Vastar Cable is using Nortel Ethernet technology to deliver digital TV, video-on-demand services, live gaming, tailored Web portals and other interactive IP multimedia services for TV. The solution also enables Internet access on IP phones, mobile phones, portable media players and laptops.

As Vastar Cable introduces new IP multimedia services over its network, scalability, resiliency and security have become critical to the company’s success. The Nortel-based infrastructure has been designed to support these objectives for Vastar Cable now and into the future.

Nortel’s Ethernet solutions help ensure Vastar can have both the performance they need and the reliability their customers demand, while offering new services that take advantage of the speed and proven reliability of Ethernet technology. As one of the WiMAX licensees for southern Taiwan, Vastar Cable plans to integrate its IPTV, voice, and broadband access services into its WiMAX operations in the future.

“Customers will only embrace new multimedia services if they work smoothly and easily,” said Y.K. Tsai, general manager, Nortel Taiwan. “To deliver robust IPTV services, Vastar Cable requires a network that operates 24/7 without network lapses or failures. In line with the company’s promise of Business Made Simple, our expertise and resources have helped deliver the reliability Vastar needs - easily and effectively. With Nortel’s end-to-end voice and data solutions working together, Vastar Cable TV can focus less on its network and more on offering the services customers want.”

The Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8300 and 8600 series combine high performance with advanced services for enhancing, protecting, and simplifying network service and operations. IPv6 and multicast capabilities help service providers future-proof their networks from tomorrow’s requirements, at the same time offering high-density ports and software functionality over a single, converged Ethernet infrastructure.
