Large number of earthquakes in Iceland Iceland has been rocked by a succession of earthquakes this month, culminating in three large tremors in the town of Selfoss which measured around 3 points on the Richter scale and one in the interior measuring 4.4. The Icelandic Meteorological Office runs a website showing the position and strength of all earthquakes in Iceland.
Flu jab doctor warns of epidemic
As mid-winter sets approaches, Europe and the US are bracing themselves for a severe flu pandemic following warnings by the inventor of the flu vaccine that its effectiveness is only limited. The virus is expected to migrate from Australia where the worst flu season in years saw over three times as many infections, particularly in young children.
Glitnir to develop first geothermal power plants in India and Nepal
Geothermal energy is set to receive a boost in the Subcontinent following and agreement between Nordic bank Glitnir and Indian energy company LNJ Bhilwara Group. Glitnir will provide finance and expertise in renewable energy to build the first geothermal power plants in India and Tibet.
Largest torrent site in Iceland shut down
In a move that could spell disaster for other BitTorrent sites, the largest torrent website in Iceland was shut down by a consortium of anti-piracy organisations. Dozens more torrent sites could be forced to close by Christmas leaving the file-sharing world in turmoil.
Icelandic drilling project sheds light on ‘black smokers’
A number of American universities are teaming up with Icelandic geothermal expertise to investigate a hydrothermal land vent in the US. Unusually the vent contains seawater and may give clues to the mysterious deep-sea phenomena known as ‘black smokers´.
