Washington, D.C.– Without his permission or even his knowledge, GEICO is campaigning for the Caveman to be the Favorite Icon for 2007 in the annual Advertising Week online voting poll. (To vote, go to www.geico.com.)

“We figured he might think that we were trying to get on his good side by campaigning for him, so we didn’t say anything to him yet,” said Ted Ward, GEICO’s vice president of marketing. “This way if it happens, it might help our relationship. Maybe he’ll see we really do have his best interests at heart.”

Despite apparent disdain by the Caveman for the auto insurer’s TV spots, the series of GEICO’s Caveman ads grabbed the attention and affection of thousands of Caveman fans around the country who created hundreds of Caveman blog sites.

A brief history on the Caveman vs. GEICO feud: GEICO got into a little trouble with the Caveman in its early ads proclaiming that using the GEICO Web site (www.geico.com) was “so easy even a Caveman could do it.” Obviously offended, the Caveman who was operating the sound boom on the set where GEICO was taping that particular commercial stormed off the set saying, “Not cool!” And the relationship hasn’t warmed up much since then.

“This could be a breakthrough we’ve been hoping for,” Ward added hopefully.

Online voting ends on September 24. Vote early. Vote Caveman.
