VIA’s Canadian - "Centennial Train" Joins in Celebrating Jasper Park’s 100th Anniversary

EDMONTON - Canada’s Jasper National Park, part of the Canadian Rocky Mountains Park UNESCO World Heritage Site, is celebrating its 100th anniversary and VIA Rail is going along for the ride. In recognition of this milestone, VIA’s flagship Canadian will be dubbed “The Centennial Train” for two departures on September 13th and 16th. With a number of on-board activities planned, customers travelling on these two trains will have an opportunity to be a part of the centennial festivities.

Beginning with VIA’s westbound train # 1 from Edmonton to Jasper on September 13th and ending with eastbound train #2 on September 16th from Jasper to Edmonton, travellers will have an opportunity to learn more about Canada’s fifth National Park from a Parks Canada representative. Interpretation sessions will be available to both Comfort (economy) and Silver & Blue (sleeper car) class passengers from two of the train’s domed observation cars. In addition VIA’s on-board staff will be serving up “Centennial” cake to all passengers.

“As the country’s national passenger rail service, we are proud to be a part of this celebration,” said Steve Del Bosco, VIA’s chief customer officer. “Each year we welcome thousands of travellers from around the world on board the Canadian, and we know that many of our customers make Jasper National Park a stopover point on their cross-country journey.”
