Vectren sets peak record for third consecutive day

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon’s stifling heat contributed to three consecutive peak electric usage records for Vectren Power Supply (Vectren). Thursday’s mark of 1,317 Megawatts (MW) bested Wednesday’s and Tuesday’s peak load of 1,316 and 1,309 respectively.

Last year’s record of 1,300 MW was set in August 2006.

“Our local generation fleet has certainly performed well this week as our region has weathered this heat wave,” said Vectren Vice President of Power Supply Ron Jochum. “Hats off to the men and women of Vectren’s power supply team who have worked diligently to ensure we continue to meet our customer’s energy needs.”

In a presentation to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission early this spring, Vectren reported that its total capacity of 1,488 megawatts (MW) is adequate to meet a projected peak demand of 1,324 MW. The 15 percent reserve margin includes 1,425 MW of generation capacity and purchasing ability in addition to interruptible load and demand side management initiatives that could yield more than 60 MW if needed.
