Alcatel-Lucent (Euronet Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has completed construction of a next-generation network for International Telecom Network Operation Services (I.T.E.N.O.S), a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom.

Alcatel-Lucent provided the next-generation IP infrastructure, which enables I.T.E.N.O.S. to offer enhanced Managed Security Services for its customers. Additional network functions including better Quality of Service (QoS) and enhanced IPv6 security features will be enabling I.T.E.N.O.S. to reduce its operating expenses and improve its overall network quality.

The Alcatel-Lucent solution includes software from its network performance product family, including VitalSuite®, appliances from the VPN Firewall Brick® family, and IP routers. In addition, Alcatel-Lucent is providing installation, maintenance and network integration services for the complete solution.

Before starting the network transformation project, I.T.E.N.O.S. had employed its parent company’s traditional network, which will be replaced by an all-IP network in the future. In the course of this change, I.T.E.N.O.S. has invested in a future-proof network of its own based on the Alcatel-Lucent operational support system and firewall products. With I.T.E.N.O.S. Connected Security solutions, customers can have fully managed transmission paths that connect the alarm systems to the associated control centers. Its customers can access their Managed Security Service via a Web portal where they can configure and change settings.

I.T.E.N.O.S’ customers include security and building management companies that need to connect security and fire alarm systems. Other customers include banks and retailers looking for a secure and swift way to handle cashless payment transactions (eCash). This customer segment places extremely stringent requirements on the security and availability of Managed Services, and also on the underlying network infrastructure. Until today, corresponding solutions were based on the PSTN network of Deutsche Telekom, and will now be transferred to the IP network.

“For our Security Services, a secure, reliable network is a basic prerequisite,” states Paul Hülsmann, chairman of the management board at I.T.E.N.O.S. GmbH. "By migrating to an IP network that is not only ’state-of-the art’ today but will also support future developments -we will be equipped to provide our customers a superior product today and in the future.”

“Our network transformation solutions give our customers the competitive edge in fiercely contested market segments,” reports Alf Henryk Wulf, Member of the Board of Alcatel-Lucent in Germany. "Network operators are evolving from being providers of mere transmission capacities to becoming providers of useful new services that can adapt to the customer’s requirements. A modern IP network makes that possible.”

The solution installed by Alcatel-Lucent includes the VPN Firewall Brick®, which offers encryption of sensitive data, and the network management software components VitalSuite® AAA for secure authentication, authorization and accounting, VitalSuite® Network Management for network management, VitalSuite® Network Performance Management for monitoring network performance, and VitalQIP® for IP address management. Also included are IP/MPLS routers in the core network and at the network edge. MPLS paths, VLANs, and IPSec tunnels are used for virtualization of the customer networks. The innovative design makes it possible to offer varying degrees of quality of service in terms of transmission quality, availability, and security against interception.
