Global Wireless Industry’s Leading Companies Step “Into The New” at QUALCOMM’s BREW 2007 Conference

The annual conference brought together more than 2,500 of the wireless industry’s premiere thought leaders and top companies from around the world to address key issues and ultimately shape the future of wireless data services.

In keeping with its theme of “Into the New,” BREW 2007 featured more than 100 panels and technical sessions directly addressing the new technologies, challenges and opportunities at the forefront of today’s wireless data market. New ways to connect wireless consumers with the content they love and new ways to drive revenue opportunities for the entire value chain were at the heart of QUALCOMM’s announcement of BREW BrandXtend™, its latest Signature Solution. BREW BrandXtend opens new channels for branded media, entertainment, music and game companies to deliver their content to consumers, while also leveraging the current BREW on-portal platform to drive advanced data services.
In her keynote address on Friday morning, Peggy Johnson, executive vice president and president of QUALCOMM Internet Services and MediaFLO Technologies, emphasized the key role BREW BrandXtend and other innovative technologies used by BREW partners around the world would play in improving the user experience and building communities for wireless consumers.
“Many of you have been using BREW to enable a truly user-centered approach to new data services, and the result has been some amazing examples of what BREW and this community can do to take mobile data into the new,” said Johnson in her keynote address. “We are committed to giving you the new technologies needed - whether it’s BREW BrandXtend, uiOne™ and others - to foster continued innovation. Johnson also welcomed to the stage Adam Ritter, vice president of mobile for Major League Baseball Advanced Media. During BREW 2007, QUALCOMM announced MLB Advanced Media as its first BREW BrandXtend customer.
“At MLB, we’ve already seen that wireless is a powerful and proven avenue for promotion of MLB interactive content, and we’re looking forward to expanding our offerings through BREW BrandXtend,” said Ritter. “Our plan with BREW BrandXtend is to enable fans to browse and purchase content from MLB.com and have it delivered right to their phone, and this is just the start.”
On the heels of QUALCOMM’s announcement with Hutchison 3G regarding its intention to launch handsets based on the BREW solution, Frank Meehan, director and general manager of the global 3G handset and application group for Hutchison Whampoa Limited, addressed the general session crowd at BREW 2007. He talked about how personalization has become critical to driving the uptake of mobile services.
George White, senior vice president of strategy and product development for Warner Music Group (WMG), spoke about how he expects new wireless technologies to expand how music lovers access their favorite songs and artists. During the conference, WMG announced it would develop a series of over-the-air, downloadable, artist-branded themes for mobile phones, which feature popular WMG artists and are based on QUALCOMM’s uiOne offering.
“The real key, we think, to getting people to buy music for their mobile phones is to truly step into the new, and take many of the innovative products that have been introduced over the past five years and combine them in new ways that leverage the power of mobility and connectivity in a connected music experience,” said White. “We are in the process of further change to be able to support our recording artists in this unprecedented level of connection with fans to create an experience developed by the content industry specifically for the fan, using the power of today’s mobile and digital platforms"
In his keynote address, John Harrobin, senior vice president of marketing and digital media for Verizon, talked about the importance of keeping the customer as the focal point of wireless multimedia offerings. In addition, Harrobin highlighted the growing success of Verizon Wireless’ BREW-powered Get It Now service, noting that in the first quarter of 2007, a full 60 percent of Verizon Wireless’ retail customer base used data services.
“Operators don’t have all the answers when it comes to building new services, and we need the help of our developer, publisher and content providers to keep the customer happy,” said Harrobin. “We need to continue putting the customer at the center of everything we do, provide applications across many segments and screens, and link them all together.”

· Introduction of the new BREW Client 4-Series, which delivers a new BREW Client architecture for wireless devices that meets the evolving market needs for a deeply integrated application execution environment.
· Announcement of licensing agreements with EoNex Technologies and VIA Telecom to integrate QUALCOMM’s BREW Client software onto their respective lines of CDMA2000® application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).
· Announcement by QUALCOMM and KTF, a leading wireless service operator in South Korea, that the first commercially available Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability (WIPI) on BREW handsets will be made available in late June to KTF subscribers from LG Electronics.
