Yale Celebrates 2007 Commencement

New Haven, Conn. — Yale University’s 2007 Commencement will be held on May 27 and May 28 on the Yale campus.

All members of the media must obtain and display Yale media credentials during Class Day (Sunday) and Commencement (Monday) ceremonies. Please email credential requests to opa@yale.edu. Reserved credentials may be picked up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday–Friday, May 24–25, at the Office of Public Affairs, ninth floor, 265 Church St, corner of Church and Grove streets.


SUNDAY, MAY 27

Yale College Baccalaureate, 11 a.m. Members of the media are invited to attend the Yale College Baccalaureate service for Yale College seniors and their families in Woolsey Hall, northwest corner of Grove and College streets. Space for camera crews must be reserved by Friday, May 25, 5 p.m., by contacting OPA at 203-432-1333. Media may cover the ceremony from the back of the balcony in Woolsey Hall. Camera crews must be in place before the ceremony begins and are requested to remain in place until the end of the event, which lasts about 90 minutes.

Yale College Class Day, 2 p.m. Members of the media are invited to attend Class Day on Old Campus, bordered by Elm, College, Chapel and High streets. The speaker will be Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria. Class Day traditions include planting the Class Ivy, reciting the Ivy Ode, awarding teaching prizes to faculty members and academic prizes to students, and singing Yale’s alma mater, “Bright College Years,” while waving a white handkerchief.

Media may cover Class Day events from the news media platform to the left of the stage, on the High Street side of Old Campus. There will be a mult-box for radio/television crews. A BNC video feed from Yale’s dedicated camera in front of the stage will provide a head-on camera angle.

Class Day will be broadcast live on local access cable channel 26.

MONDAY, MAY 28

University Commencement, 10:30 a.m. Commencement exercises on Old Campus will begin when all graduates have reached their seats. Media should use the High Street gate closest to Elm Street to enter Old Campus and access the media platform. This is the same gate used to accommodate guests with disabilities or special needs. The gate will be staffed by OPA to assist members of the media.

All media photographers, reporters and television camera crews must cover Commencement from the news media platform, where video and audio feeds will be available. Access to the platform requires a Yale media credential.

Information about the number of degrees being granted, the names of those receiving honorary degrees and other awards will be provided on the news media platform. The graduate and professional schools hold their diploma ceremonies in diverse locations (see below) following the main Commencement exercises. Commencement will be broadcast live on local access cable channel 26.

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences: Commencement Convocation, Sunday, May 27, 1 p.m., Hall of Graduate Studies Courtyard, 320 York St. Student prizes and faculty mentor awards are presented. Address by William Nordhaus, Sterling Professor of Economics at Yale.

Diploma ceremony, Monday, 12:15 p.m., Woolsey Hall, corner of Prospect and College streets. Students receiving master’s degrees from the MacMillan Center for International & Area Studies (formerly known as the Yale Center for International & Area Studies) and the Economic Growth Center have their diploma ceremony in Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. Included are masters’ degree candidates in African Studies, East Asian Studies, International & Development Economics, International Relations and Russian & European Studies. All others are in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets.

School of Architecture: Diploma ceremony, Monday, noon, 4th floor of the A & A Building, 180 York Street (corner of Chapel Street).

School of Art: Diploma ceremony, Monday, noon, Holcombe T. Green Jr. Hall, 1156 Chapel St.

Divinity School: Diploma ceremony, Monday, immediately following the Old Campus ceremony, Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, 409 Prospect St.

School of Drama: Diploma ceremony, Monday, 12:30, University Theater, 222 York St.

Epidemiology and Public Health: Diploma ceremony, Monday, 2:30 p.m., Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets.

School of Forestry and Environmental Studies: Diploma ceremony, Monday, 12:40 p.m., outside Marsh Hall, 360 Prospect St. Ceremonies include faculty awards and class speaker.

Law School: Diploma ceremony, Monday, immediately following the Old Campus ceremony, Law School Courtyard, 127 Wall St. (rain location: Payne Whitney Gymnasium Lanman Center, 70 Tower Pkwy.).

School of Management: Diploma ceremony, Monday, 12:30 p.m., Caulkin Courtyard, behind 56 Hillhouse Ave. (in case of severe weather, the diploma ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets).

School of Medicine: Diploma ceremony, Monday, 12:30 p.m., courtyard of Edward S. Harkness Hall, 367 Cedar St. (severe weather location: Mary S. Harkness Auditorium, Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St).
