Newark students and their families gathered at the Science Park High School in Newark, where PSEG co-sponsored the 4th Annual Families in Technology (FIT) Day.

The FIT Day event was presented by the Black Data Processing Associates New Jersey Chapter (BDPA-NJ), and hosted with corporate sponsors and strategic partners to elevate technology awareness. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to come together as a community, improve computer skills and educate families in urban communities about the possibilities available through technology. It also provides an incentive for children to bring their parents to workshops that help make learning, research and communication fun,” said PSEG employee, Irma Pittman, who is also BDPA-NJ chairperson and former president.

Thirty refurbished computers were donated by PSEG and raffled off to Newark schoolchildren and their families. These laptops were refurbished by a team of volunteer PSEG associates during their own time. Another co-sponsor of FIT Day, Microsoft, provided and loaded all the laptop software at no cost.

Newark Mayor, Cory Booker, attended as well as PSEG executives Peggy Pego, PSEG senior vice president – human resources and chief human resources officer; and Manoj Chouthai, PSEG vice president information technology and chief information officer. PSEG’s participation underscores the value of corporate commitment to further workforce development and diversity.

Attendees sat in on workshops that covered helpful topics such as computing basics and repair, the Internet, and personal communication, and were also provided with cultural entertainment throughout the day. Co-sponsoring the event with PSEG and Microsoft was Prudential Financial.

Through their support of quality, community-focused programs as Families in Technology Day, PSEG continues to maintain their tradition of strengthening community involvement through volunteerism.
