Nortel Goverment Solutions Set To Address Next-Generation U.S. defense Network

WEBWIRE

WASHINGTON – Nortel Government Solutions*, a U.S. company wholly owned by Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT], has become the first supplier authorized to provide key switching components for the next generation of the network that provides global command and control for the entire U.S. military.

Nortel’s Communication Server (CS) 2100 (Rel. SE08) and CS 1000 (Rel. 4.5) have been added to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Voice Network Approved Products List (APL). The CS 2100 is the only carrier-grade multifunction VoIP switching platform certified by the Joint Interoperability Testing Center (JITC) for use in the Defense Switched Network (DSN). The CS 1000 is an enterprise-grade VoIP switching platform also certified for use in the DSN for small end offices.

“This is a big deal for us,” said Chuck Saffell, chief executive officer, Nortel Government Solutions. “It leverages the strength, reliability and security of Nortel’s VoIP technology to put us in a strong leadership position when it comes to meeting stringent DoD requirements.”

Nortel’s CS 2100 is a cornerstone of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Multi Function Switch (MFS) project, which is intended to IP-enable the complete DSN core.

The CS 2100 and CS 1000 support mission-critical command and control, including Multi-Level Precedence and Preemption (MLPP), with full enterprise feature set access between TDM and IP phones. They are the ‘on-ramps’ to Assured Real-Time Services and NetCentric communications migration, including support for DoD Assured Service SIP, IPv6, QoS and enhanced security. This is expected to reduce operating costs, improve control and responsiveness, and enable new applications like integrated SIP voice, video and collaboration.

Both the CS 2100 and CS 1000 combine Nortel’s comprehensive enterprise telephony, multimedia and unified communications capabilities with scalability, security and reliability to meet or exceed the most rigorous government and military requirements.
