Conroy at the 2024 L.A. Times Festival of Books. The literary festival will occur on April 20-21, 2024, at the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles, USA.

Author John W. Conroy has been embedded with the US Army six times in Iraq and five times in Afghanistan. He was a soldier in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. His first-hand experience of war inspired him to write a series of articles and heart-tugging novels. His book “The Embedded Ones” tells the story of Private Bill Collins, who did not pursue a career in journalism after being discharged from the US Army in the late sixties. However, he returned to the US Army in that capacity in Iraq and Afghanistan in the early 2000s.

Private Collins becomes friends with a group of young journalists, including Jess Wagner, a reporter for Stars and Stripes, Dae Larson, a talented journalist from CNN, and Lisabeth Newberry, who reports for the Canadian paper, The Renfrew Times. There are no veterans of the war in the sixties among them. He traverses through the new wars, from Baghdad to Kirkuk and Bagram to Kandahar to Jalalabad, comparing them to his time in the military in Vietnam in the sixties. He returns to Vietnam between Embeds, accompanied by his new friends from the present wars.
