“March of the Penguins” takes the audience into the pitiless and inhospitable ice deserts of Antarctica for an incredible story of courage, adventure and survival. Each winter, Emperor penguins march in single file through the harshest conditions to perform a ritual courtship and monogamous mating that produces a single egg. This is one of nature’s most perilous and heartwarming stories about the instincts that help assure the survival of a species.
In “Grizzly Man,” director Werner Herzog paints a complex portrait of self-styled grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell, who for 13 summers lived among the bears in Alaska. In 2003 Treadwell’s bodily remains, along with those of his girlfriend, were found after both of them were mauled and devoured by a grizzly. Treadwell had filmed his final five seasons in Alaska, and Herzog uses this footage to explore the sometimes uneasy relationship between man and nature. Following the screening, Herzog will discuss the making of the film and take questions from the audience.
All screenings in the series are free and open to the public. They will begin at 7 p.m. at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater. Filmmakers will be present whenever possible to discuss their films and take questions from the audience. The Linwood Dunn Theater is located at the Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, 1313 North Vine Street, at the northwest corner of Fountain Avenue and Vine Street in Hollywood.
