Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure Risks in New York

Last month, The Citizen published a report about an organization that runs a family and children’s center in Auburn, New York being fined thousands of dollars for improper asbestos removal.  The organization that runs the center was cited for three serious violations according to the article.
 
Asbestos-containing materials can still be found in thousands of commercial, institutional, and residential properties in the tri-state area. Workers involved in industries such as construction, demolition, and remodeling activities that work in older properties may even come into contact with asbestos on a frequent basis.
 
Exposure to asbestos fibers over time can lead to mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Malignant mesothelioma is a disease where cancer cells are found in the thin layer of tissue that lines the chest cavity and covers the lungs or the thin layer of tissue that lines the abdomen and most of the organs in the abdomen.  Many people with malignant mesothelioma have worked or lived in places where they inhaled or swallowed asbestos.
 
According to the NIH’s National Cancer Institute, possible signs of malignant mesothelioma include shortness of breath and pain under the rib cage. Sometimes the cancer causes fluid to collect around the lung or in the abdomen. These symptoms may be caused by the fluid or malignant mesothelioma, although other conditions may also cause the same symptoms. The National Cancer Institute recommends people check with their doctor if you have any of the following problems:
 

• Trouble breathing
• Pain under the rib cage
• Pain or swelling in the abdomen
• Lumps in the abdomen
• Weight loss for no known reason

 
"Before any construction, demolition, or remodeling activities take place in a building that could potentially have asbestos, it’s imperative that a qualified asbestos inspector is brought in to inspect and test suspect materials,” said Michael Berrevoets, President, VOETS, LLC. “Often asbestos-containing materials, such as popcorn ceilings, plasters, and even linoleum flooring, are overlooked by untrained persons. In many cases, an asbestos survey is required by law, with potentially stiff penalties climbing into the tens of thousands of dollars if not performed. When asbestos is found prior to disturbance, then proper safety precautions can be put in place to protect both workers and building occupants.”
