Oklahoma Career Novelist, Norma Jean Lutz says: “Self-Publishing is not for the Faint of Heart”

Then she began to read of other published authors who had cut all ties with traditional publishers and chose the path of self-publishing. “I was amazed,” says Norma Jean. “I could see a newbie writer turning to self-publishing, but these were seasoned veteran authors who knew what it was to have been published.”

“Is your question how many books have I written; or how many have been published? The former is more than the latter.”

“Writing is hard work.” This statement comes from career novelist, Norma Jean Lutz. She should know since she’s been active in the writing and publishing world for over thirty years; plus, she’s authored over fifty published books – mostly good books for teens.

When people ask her how many book she’s written, her answer is always: “Is your question how many books have I written; or how many have been published? The former is more than the latter.” She claims there are still more manuscripts in the bowels of her hard drive that have never seen the light of day.

This author has spent a lifetime writing good books for teens. She states, “I have to write like I have to breathe.” But at one time, she was in a long dry spell. Not because she suffered from writer’s block, but because she suffered from publisher’s block. Even after publishing so many books, it suddenly became impossible to find an agent or a publisher for her newest novel. It was a discouraging and a frustrating time in her career.

Then she began to read of other published authors who had cut all ties with traditional publishers and chosen the path of self-publishing. “I was amazed,” says Norma Jean. “I could see a newbie writer turning to self-publishing, but these were seasoned veteran authors who knew what it was to have been published.”

These accounts changed everything for Norma Jean. She began a year-long stint of getting rights of her past published works reverted to her. That was the first step.

She went on to compile a collection of six of her sweet teen romances and called it the Norma Jean Lutz Classic Collection. Covers were changed, titles were changed, edits completed. But story lines were not altered and even though these good books for teens had been published in the 90s, as Norma Jean says, “The stories are timeless.”

Now in addition to saying “Writing is hard work,” she adds this statement as well: “Self-Publishing is not for the Faint of Heart.” Indie authors these days are not just writers, but they must become entrepreneurs as well. Branding, marketing, and advertising all come into play. It’s been stated that indie authored books are now estimated to compose up to 20% of the entire book market. That percentage grows each day. That massive influx means each indie author must take on the responsibility of promotion.

From another successful indie author, Norma Jean learned the marketing strategy of using one title as a giveaway. After creating a marketing campaign around giving away a free copy of “Flower in the Hills” things began to escalate.

Even though the role of an indie author is hard work, and sometime difficult work, still and yet Norma Jean says, “It’s satisfying work. At the end of the day I’m still excited and ready to push forward.” She feels that the hard work is nothing at all compared to the frustration of dealing with the faceless, mostly uncaring, traditional publishing houses.

“And now the term short shelf life, will never apply to my good books for teens ever again!”
