Vietnam Vet Speaks Out

A Vietnam Veteran’s ongoing struggle to get help from a Veterans Administration immersed in scandal. According to Carl Holgate: “I refuse to lie down and become another VA Statistic without a fight!” Sadly, Holgate’s story is but one, among many, regarding the Veterans Administration and the care they provide our Veterans.

“Honor to the soldier and sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor, also, to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field and serves, as he best can, the same cause.” ― Abraham Lincoln

Carl Holgate is not happy with his local VA, the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL.  He states: “I’ve been to nine VA’s across the country in the forty-five years I’ve been in the VA system. This is the first time I’m dissatisfied with the care I have received.”

When asked about recent comments by VA Secretary Robert A. McDonald that things are improving, despite the ongoing VA scandals, Holgate chuckled and said: “Go to ‘The VA is Lying’ and get their view of the situation. I trust the word of my fellow Veterans above the word of any politically motivated stooge.”

Holgate believes the Gainesville VA is staffed by those who care for our Veterans and have their best interest at heart. Holgate claims: “The problem isn’t the staff in most cases, it’s the management.”  Holgate has been battling to see a Specialist for months. He goes on to state: “My condition has deteriorated to a point I should be in assisted living.”

Holgate’s growing concerns over his health prompted him to make an appointment with a Specialist outside the VA. An MRI and various testing have been scheduled to determine the exact nature of his illness. “Now all I have to do is figure out how to pay for everything,” said Holgate.

Holgate claims the VA won’t pay because they didn’t approve it. Asked why he does not use his Veterans Choice Card, he states, “They told me I didn’t meet their qualifications.”

Holgate has launched a fundraising campaign on Go Fund Me. “Besides raising money for my medical expenses, it’s a way to get my story out to the public,” he said; then went on to add:  “It’s all about the Likes. Likes are an indicator of how many Americans care about Our Veterans, my goal is a hundred million Likes on my Facebook Page.“

”It’s time for you, the American Public, to fight for us, the American Veteran,” Holgate concluded.
