The Department of Health & Human Services has designated September as National Yoga Month. This national observance focuses on educating the public about the health benefits of yoga and to inspire a healthy lifestyle.

According to children’s yoga expert Teresa Anne Power, “many people are beginning to realize the numerous health benefits of yoga for adults, but what they may not realize is that kids can reap the same benefits from practicing yoga as well.”

Power, the author of The ABCs of Yoga for Kids, maintains that practicing simple yoga poses is the ideal way for kids to naturally unwind and obtain physical activity at the same time.  In fact, the Mayo Clinic has stated that “yoga can be a gentle method for your child to get more physical activity and enhance his or her well-being.”

To help young yogis on their yoga journey, Power has developed a yoga challenge for kids where they can practice a new yoga pose every day of September and share the photos on social media. The goal is to encourage kids to do simple yoga poses and to have fun at the same time. For example, kids can practice the dog posture and have their picture taken doing this pose next to their dog.

In children, notes Ms. Power, yoga helps develop discipline, aids in the performance of other sports, heightens body awareness and self-control, helps children gain strength and flexibility, increases the ability to focus and concentrate, helps kids feel empowered, and helps them stay calm (even kids with ADD). All told, this translates into healthier minds and bodies, not to mention better performance at school.
