Lewisburg Student Earns Recognition in Pennsylvania American Water "Protect Our Watersheds" Art Contest

A fourth grader from Lewisburg earned the third place in Pennsylvania American Water’s 13th Annual “Protect Our Watersheds” Art Contest. The company received nearly 800 entries from fourth-, fifth-and sixth-graders across the commonwealth. Pennsylvania American Water announced the contest winners as part of National Drinking Water Week, which runs May 3-9.

Micah Zook earned third place for eastern Pennsylvania for his artwork depicting a healthy, fish-filled stream, to show how watershed protection impacts aquatic life and nature.

In addition, Mackenzie O’Connor, a sixth-grade student from Spring-Ford School District in Montgomery County placed first, and Nora Betts, a fifth-grade student from Lackawanna County took second place for eastern Pennsylvania. The three students will receive gift cards for their winning entries.

“The popularity of the ‘Protect Our Watersheds Art Contest’ has grown over the years, and we truly enjoy seeing the creativity that students use to express the need to preserve our water sources,” said Pennsylvania American Water President Kathy L. Pape. "These students are future stewards of our natural resources, and this contest helps them better understand the importance of protecting our environment.”

The statewide grand prize winner is Nova Douglas, a sixth-grade home school student from Big Run in Jefferson County. Her artwork will be featured on “bloomer cards” and distributed across the state by Pennsylvania American Water. Bloomers are seed-filled cards that, when planted and tended, produce a variety of wildflowers.

Pennsylvania American Water’s contest asks the students to accompany their artwork with a short description of how watershed protection affects them personally. After reviewing the entries, a panel of judges selected three top drawings from both eastern and western Pennsylvania before naming Douglas as the grand prize winner.
