Fujifilm Announces New Features and Functionality for Dternity Data Storage Solution

Valhalla – WEBWIRE

VALHALLA, N.Y., April 13, 2015FUJIFILM Recording Media U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of FUJIFILM Corporation and the leading global manufacturer of data storage tape, today announced major updates to the functionality of Dternity, Fujifilm’s data storage solution. New features include the first integration of both file and object storage on LTFS media, the all new XpanDisk system, and multi-library support.

The first file and object-based LTFS storage solution using tape
With newly added support for object storage, Dternity NAS becomes the first complete solution to offer both file and object storage on LTFS media while operating either on-site or off-premise. By utilizing a standard S3 interface with an underlying RESTful API, cloud storage users can connect to Dternity directly without needing to program special calls or APIs. All data managed by the Dternity NAS is easily accessible by CIFS/NFS or S3.

Expanded Dternity NAS disk capacity with XpanDisk
StrongBox XpanDisk - a new hardware disk option available beginning today for Dternity - seamlessly expands the disk capacity of the Dternity NAS by allowing users to add the right amount of disk space for performance storage alongside the central archive capabilities of the system. Through Dternity’s customizable and share-level policies, users can define system performance and access data from disk while ensuring that their data is always protected on Fujifilm’s linear tape file system (LTFS) media. The scalable storage delivered by XpanDisk expedites data access for end users and applications. Per the user-defined policies, Dternity automates data movement between disk and tape to unleash the economic value of tape and maximize storage resources.

Each StrongBox XpanDisk module can support up to 45 disk drives and can be ordered with various capacity options. A modular addition to any Dternity NAS, XpanDisk configurations scale from one - up to six - modules to increase external disk capacity from 16TB up to 1.3PB. With hot-swappable drives and spares, XpanDisk provides full uptime and universal data availability.

Multi-library support for “touchless” storage
By adding support for two separate tape libraries, Dternity is now able to create multiple copies of user content in separate locations, allowing for maximum optimization of their storage environment while scaling to meet capacity needs. Additionally, users in need of an expanded library capacity can now simply add another library to their chain, alleviating excessive spending on larger solutions while eliminating the complexity of multiple systems.

Dternity’s complete storage solution
Dternity is Fujifilm’s complete data storage solution. Combining onsite Network Attached Storage with secure offsite archiving, Dternity provides a cost effective, scalable and easy-to-use solution for the preservation and protection of critical data.

Dternity leverages Fujifilm’s tape technology which just recently reached a breakthrough in data density of 123 billion bits per square inch on linear magnetic particulate tape. This milestone equates to a single tape cartridge capable of storing up to 220 terabytes of uncompressed data. This breakthrough was achieved using an advanced prototype tape incorporating NANOCUBIC technology developed by Fujifilm, with advanced tape-drive technologies developed by IBM.
