Volunteer firefighter Ryan Severson will be adding a $10,000 Firehouse Makeover to his legacy with the Northwood Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company (NVFC) in Northwood, Iowa. Ryan, a 15 year veteran of the fire company, won the final California Casualty $10,000 Firehouse Makeover contest.

Three generations of Ryan’s family, including his father, brother and now his son, have volunteered with the NVFC. The 127 year old fire company receives no tax payer funding and is proud to be the only volunteer fire department in Iowa that operates entirely from donations.

“This will really make a difference,” said Ryan, the NVFC’s treasurer. “We can now fix things around the firehouse that have been neglected because other things like purchasing medical/rescue equipment and firefighting tools took priority. This really takes the worry off my shoulders.”

The $10,000 Firehouse Makeover from California Casualty will enable the NVFC to replace tables and chairs that have missing arms and exposed screws, buy new couches and recliners and provide a big screen TV to help train new recruits. “This shows that California Casualty understands small town fire departments and really does care,” Ryan said.

“Firefighters are on the line every day courageously protecting our homes and businesses. Giving them a nicer environment to work is the least we could do to say thanks,” said Mike McCormick, California Casualty Vice President.

California Casualty will continue to give back to firefighters, EMTs and other first responders with a new Work Hard/Play Hard contest for 2015. Past prizes included Harley Davidson motorcycles, $10,000, a Sea Doo and an ATV. The entry form, rules and information about the 2015 California Casualty Work Hard/Play Hard contest can be found at http://go.calcas.com/harley.
