Back to School Can Sometimes Mean a Return to IAQ Problems for Students & Faculty

Clark Seif Clark (CSC) provides indoor air quality (IAQ) testing services to protect students and faculty from pollutants in the air they breathe.

Chatsworth, CA – WEBWIRE

It’s important that returning students and teachers are not exposed to harmful indoor environmental pollutants that could impact their health and ability to teach and learn.

In some parts of the country, students and teachers have already returned to the classroom to start the new school year. Many other districts are gearing up for the annual return as they wrap up building repair and renovation projects that took place during the summer break.

These projects often include preventive maintenance and repairs to classrooms and school buildings that may have suffered moisture damage and mold growth or in older schools involved the removal of building materials that contained asbestos or lead-based paints.  Even once these projects are completed, the off-gassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from new building materials, furnishing and as a result of painting projects can create IAQ problems.

The presence of mold, VOCs, lead and asbestos can all cause health concerns for students and teachers.  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Poor indoor air quality can impact the comfort and health of students and staff, which, in turn, can affect concentration, attendance, and student performance. In addition, if schools fail to respond promptly to poor IAQ, students and staff are at an increased risk of short-term health problems, such as fatigue and nausea, as well as long-term problems like asthma.”

One company that has helped school districts across the country identify and resolve indoor environmental quality issues is Clark Seif Clark.  “It’s important that returning students and teachers are not exposed to harmful indoor environmental pollutants that could impact their health and ability to teach and learn,” said Franco Seif, President of Clark Seif Clark.  “At CSC, our building science professionals have the tools and expertise to identify a wide range of indoor pollutants and potential hazards while offering solutions to remedy problems if they are found.”
