New Book About Diversity Now in Spanish

WEBWIRE

The White Tortilla: Reflections of a Second Generation Mexican-American is the first book from David P. Diaz, Ed.D., an educator and administrator at Cuesta College, in San Luis Obispo, California. The revised English version (Jan. 2005) is now joined by the Spanish language version (Mar. 2005).

According to Diaz, “The lessons of The White Tortilla are derived from the stories of my life and the lives of my parents—through the rich cultural traditions, the characters and experiences of my youth. This is a story I wrote for my children, their children and others interested in the challenges of a diverse America.”

Diaz, a second generation Mexican-American, recounts his life and the lessons of growing up in an ethnically diverse neighborhood. Concurrently, he focuses on the dilemma of those he labels “White Tortillas,” Americans caught in their own purgatory of ambivalence, unable to “fit in” with either their native or the dominant cultural society.

The brief, and often humorous, vignettes introduce unforgettable characters, chronicle David’s quest for success and acceptance, and dispense his consejo (advice) to all who seek success in a diverse America. The lessons of the White Tortilla form a patchwork of life and love and illustrate a paradigm for success—a strategy for adapting to the challenges of the modern world.
