Mortsel, Belgium, August 16, 2006, Agfa HealthCare announces today that the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center has chosen IMPAX RIS for hospitals to join the Agfa Healthcare solutions in PACS, Orthopedics, Women’s Care, Computed Radiography and TalkStation Speech Recognition, becoming the largest integrated RIS/PACS/Speech implementation to date in the United States. The contract also includes a comprehensive long-term service agreement. The integrated system will enhance patient exam and workflow, permitting users to access records and images system-wide.

UCSD School of Medicine, one of the nation’s top-ranked academic institutions, is dedicated to medical research, education and healthcare services. UCSD Medical Center was recently ranked among best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report’s annual ’Best Hospitals’ Issue. UCSD has also been recently identified by the American Hospital Association, Hospitals and Health Networks publication as one of the 100 most wired hospitals and health systems in the country in its eight annual survey. UCSD Medical Center is one hospital with two sites operating under one consolidated license, and has over 21,000 annual discharges.

The integrated RIS/PACS solution will allow facilities in the UCSD network to offer patients convenient and timely access to the first available exam at any site in the enterprise through the utilization of a ’single look’ diagnostic imaging scheduling program. In addition, the overall cost of services will be reduced, as the implementation will provide not only a ’filmless’ but a ’paperless’ workflow as well.

“Upon implementation of the system, UCSD’s entire radiology workflow will be streamlined and improved. Agfa HealthCare’s combined solutions will assist us in the enhancement of scheduling and ordering exams; manage, store and display images and greatly increase report turnaround time. This will result in improved and increased patient care allowing the medical center to diagnose more patients more quickly,” said Ed Babakanian, UCSD Medical Center’s Chief Information Officer.

“We’re thrilled with the expansion of our partnership with UCSD Medical Center,” said David Chambers, vice president of Sales and Marketing for Agfa HealthCare in the U.S. “We have long been committed to being at the forefront of information technology development. Being chosen by an institution as renowned as UCSD affirms our global position in the area of PACS, RIS and reporting, as well as a supplier of information management systems from the radiology department to the entire enterprise.”
