Baby Sleep Bags - SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping Recommendations
Australia’s SIDS rate had declined by 85% since the introduction of the SIDS and Kids safe sleeping campaign – saving over 6500 lives.
Shane Pepper owners of Plum Baby & Kids and father of 2 kids said baby sleeping bags are the simplest and safest way to put your baby to sleep.
“The key benefit of a sleeping bag is that it keeps a baby’s head uncovered”, said Mr Pepper
Mr Pepper and wife Genie are sponsors of the successful SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping Campaign.
Since the campaign began much has been done to reduce the number of babies dying from SIDS”, said Mr Pepper
“The figures show that Australia’s SIDS rate has declined by a massive 85% since the introduction of the campaign”.
“That equated to the saving of 6,500 babies lives”
“To give you an example of the difference the SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping campaign has made, the figures from the ABS shows that 500 babies died in 1989 and in 2010 was reduced to 81.”
Mr Pepper said baby sleeping bags wear effective because they:
1. Lessen the likelihood that a baby will roll and stay sleeping safely
on their back
2. Stops a baby’s head and face being covered by blankets
3. Ensures babies are the correct temperature when sleeping
4. Prevents a baby’s legs from dangling out between the rails and getting caught
Mr Pepper said as well as using a baby sleeping bag parents to prevent SIDS parents and caregivers should following the SIDS and Kids Safe Sleeping guidelines by placing baby on its back to go to sleep, breast fed if you can and sleep baby in a safe cot in parents room, have a smoke free environment.
