The state of Maine passed a new law that requires landlords to test the air of the residential buildings for radon. This new law will be effective on March 1, 2014 and every 10 years thereafter.

Radon is defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring, radioactive, inert gaseous element. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer and is the primary cause for people who do not smoke. Since Maine is moderately high in natural uranium-238, an element that increases the degree of radon in the air and the water, law officials constructed this new law to ensure safer air for all residents.

“It’s important to take the presence of radon in households across the country seriously, and this new law will help ensure that residents are living each day without the existence of this hazardous and deadly gas,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.

Since radon cannot be detected by human senses, the only way to confirm radon is through testing. The Maine law prohibits landlords to conduct radon tests themselves. Instead, radon testing must be administered by a testing agent that is registered with the Department of Health and Human Services. EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides comprehensive radon information from a reputable website at www.RadonTestingLab.com.

“Now is the best time to test for radon as homes across the United States and Canada are sealed and heated during these cold winter months, which increases the production of radon and makes for a better reading,” said Frasca. “EMSL is a reliable laboratory that has a wealth of experience in radon testing. We offer a number of tests with quick results provided by our corporate headquarters located in Cinnaminson, New Jersey.”
